Friends of Saint Cloud: Thomas from Burgh

For this edition of Friends of Saint Cloud, we caught up with Thomas from Burgh, the Tassie cycling brand known for its distinctive bar tape designs.

We've been fans of Burgh and their tape for a long time...between the all-weather grip, comfort, durability and silicone backing that makes installation and repositioning a breeze, it has quickly become a mechanic and customer fav.

We've even teamed up with them, releasing a Saint Cloud x Burgh tape.

We asked Thomas a few questions about the brand, inspiration and what he's riding:

What made you decide to start Burgh?

Whilst studying graphic design, I did some work for Tassie company 4SHAW, who at the time were a big deal for sock doping, and in the MTB scene. In talking with Dion, I wanted to do something in the cycling world, and thanks to his guidance we landed on bar tape, not apparel, which was way too expensive for a student. Surprisingly, it went alright with small runs, getting some traction in Melbourne. And since then, it’s gone from a side-hustle before, at lunch and after my full-time job, to now employing myself and Ellie, and recently getting a part-time person to help with marketing. Since then, we’ve loved giving back by either sponsoring riders, teams or privateers, getting involved with community events and races, and donating back to great grassroots organisations within Tasmania.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

Generally, things just come up, or someone says let’s try this. Most of the time it’s around visually representing an idea, historical graphic design elements, or just something downright fun. Moving forward, we’re trying to do more topical releases, with related designs.

What are you riding at the moment?

Bike - a 2011 Scott Addict (thanks to inspiration from Cadel) mainly for the odd commute, it’s a bit dusty, and a Kona something-a-rather for MTB

Tape - Endurance Black

Do you remember the first time you spotted someone you didn't know riding with Burgh tape?

The first time was strolling around in Hobart whilst visiting, it was really, really odd. Then I noticed a couple of riders in Launceston who were here for the Tour of Tasmania. The biggest/most memorable one, was we were travelling overseas in Vancouver, and someone at the traffic lights rocked up and he was rolling Matter White. That was such a pinch me moment.

What's your favourite ride, race or cycling adventure you've taken part in lately?

WELL! Unfortunately, I don’t get out and about much anymore, but generally my annual training/riding is around winter here in Tassie, to make sure I’ve done some riding before the Devil’s Cardigan in Derby. It’s an absolutely amazing event, but the community, people, volunteers and the vibes far outweigh the world-class course, which is pretty amazing! Otherwise, there are plenty of amazing gravel roads and MTB trails around Tasmania.
